Ch01 – I would say: Chapter 01 is the keystone for understanding Seth and the Seth Material.
Ch01 is NOT a high level Introduction or Overview that can be breezed over. Right from the first paragraph, Seth reveals the revolutionary foundations and context required for understanding everything that will follow in subsequent chapters.
It is VERY IMPORTANT that the Seth Student takes the time to understand and accept the founding concepts of chapter one.
- Reality is a personal creation, created from your ideas, attitudes, feelings and beliefs.
- It is personal; individually and uniquely different from the physical realities perceived by others, yet created from the insights and cooperation of each and every other conscious creator that creates their own personal realities.
- PERSONAL Reality is a projection of YOUR soul.
- It is NOT a reality external to your conscious knowing. Your being does NOT exist within a physical reality created before you existed or independently by others.
- It is NOT a separate external creation of your soul/mind either. Ie; physical reality is NOT a stand alone from your being creation.
- Physical reality is the essence of your being and soul expressed in physical terms. It is you. It is the unique you expressed in physical terms. Physical reality is the expression of YOUR thoughts, feelings, and expectations perceived as physical characteristics.
Major Concepts in Ch01
- The living picture of the world grows within the mind.
- There is no effect in the exterior world that does not spring from an inner source. There is no motion that does not first occur within the mind.
- The living world consists of a spontaneous cooperation.
It does not belong to mankind alone, however. Each living being possesses it, and the living world consists of a spontaneous cooperation that exists between the smallest and the highest, the greatest and the lowly, between the atoms and the molecules and the conscious, reasoning mind.
All manner of insects, birds and beasts cooperate in this venture, producing the natural environment. - Part of each individual’s soul, then, is intimately connected with what we will call the world’s soul, or the soul of the earth.
- World as you see it is a reflection of what you are, a reflection not in glass but in three dimensional reality. You project YOUR thoughts, feelings, and expectations outward, then you perceive them as the outside reality.
- When it seems to you that others are observing you, you are observing yourself from the standpoint of your own projections.
This is a very important concept. It is purposefully included here with the personal reality concept to get you to think more deeply on the subtleties of how a personal creation can also be a cooperative creation. These should at first seem to be contradictions. In actuality, the discovery of seeming contradictions always indicates greater insight needs to be sought.
I believe Seth, Right from the start, is setting you up to begin wondering what he means. Seth’s Ideas are presented in a manner that make you ask questions of yourself. I believe Seth expects and knows we’ll find those insights are attracted when we are emotionally charged with intense interests in understanding and reconciling the seeming differences; the puzzles meant to develop our inner insights.
Literally, when I contemplate you reading,
“When it seems to you that others are observing you, you are observing yourself from the standpoint of your own projections”, Session 610 NPR Pg4
In actuality, I see myself NOT as writing to you, but writing to myself. Because, from the context of my personal perspective; I see you are me, giving back to me what I expect of you.
In creating you in my reality, I create you as I understand and believe you would best present yourself for my valued purposes. I create you in conformity to what you have cooperatively communicated to me within the soul/mind realm.
Likewise I, from the context of your perspective; am you giving back to you what you expect of me.
In the context of your reality, we’ve cooperated in your creation of me within your creation. In the larger non-physical realm, we cooperate by communicating telepathically and your primary constructions use my cooperative input known as a secondary constructions.
In essence, in my reality creation, you only appear as I would have you appear being consistent with my interpretation of your cooperative contributions being formed according to my beliefs, thoughts, feeling tones and expectations. It is in this manner, we cooperate while yet it is only I that form my own personal reality.

- Pg4 – You are the living picture of yourself. You project what you think you are outward into flesh. Your feelings, your conscious and unconscious thoughts, all alter and form your physical image.
It is not as easy, however, to realize that your feelings and thoughts form your exterior experience in the same way, or that the events that appear to happen to you are initiated by you within your mental or psychic inner environment. - Pg 5 – Psychological structures form to which various names are given. [They] also retain their identity, their pattern of uniqueness, even while they change constantly, die and are reborn.
- The psyche brings forth the ego that perceives psychologically as the eye perceives physically. The psyche brings forth the ego that perceives psychologically as the eye perceives physically.
- P4-5 What is the psyche? How is it different than the mind or soul? See also Seth’s book: Nature of the Psyche Pg5-16
- The psyche brings forth the ego that perceives psychologically as the eye perceives physically. The psyche brings forth the ego that perceives psychologically as the eye perceives physically.
- Pg 9 – Your experience in the world of physical matter flows outward from the center of your inner psyche. Then you perceive this experience.
- Which comes first, the psychic event or the perception of physically experiencing the event? How is the perception of an event recognized as a physical feedback experience different from the originating psychic event projected into physical matter and sensed by physical senses.
- Pg 10 – Altering the state of the psyche automatically alters the physical circumstances.
- How do we alter the state of the psyche?
- There is no other valid way of changing physical events. It might help if you imagine an inner living dimension within yourself in which you create, in miniature psychic form, all the exterior conditions that you know. Simply put, you do exactly this. Your thoughts, feelings and mental pictures can be called incipient exterior events, for in one way or another each of these is materialized into physical reality.
- Of what within an inner living dimension of ourselves do we create, in miniature psychic form, what becomes our exterior conditions? Can we manipulate these in our waking consciousness?
- You change even the most permanent-seeming conditions of your life constantly through the varying attitudes you have toward them. There is nothing in your exterior experience that did not originate within you.
- What are permanent-seeming conditions in life? Attitudes toward what changes those permanent-seeming conditions?
- If we cooperate with all of mass consciousness in changing and creating physical reality, how is it that there is nothing that does not originate within you?
- If all exterior experience originates from within, can I complain about a boss, co-worker or spouse? How is it we experience unwanted relationships? What psychic attitudes formed within the inner living dimensions of ourselves become the exterior conditions we dislike in some relationships? Is it the attitude of disliking that causes the disliked relationship? Or, is it some belief that we should have such an attitude? If a belief, Is it a belief that something in the relationship is threatening to a more valued precious of which we have previously discerned a valued preference? It is hard to have an appreciative loving attitude toward something we perceive a threat. What came first?
- Can anything threaten us if, There is nothing in your exterior experience that did not originate within you? What is the real threat, a devil, a destroyer capable of destroying the reality within which we have or find our being?
Or can we trust we live in a safe universe?
- Interactions with others do occur, of course, yet there are none that you do not accept or draw to you by your thoughts, attitudes, or emotions.Your feelings have electromagnetic realities that rise outward, affecting the atmosphere itself. They group through attraction, building up areas of events and circumstances that finally coalesce, so to speak, either in matter as objects-or as events in “time.”
- In the most miraculous fashion are you given the gift of creating your experience. In this existence you are learning to handle the inexhaustible energy that is available to you.
- Some feelings and thoughts are translated into structures that you call objects; these exist, in your terms, in a medium you call space. Others are translated instead into psychological structures called events, that seem to exist in a medium you call time. … So your inner experience is translated in those terms.
- What inner experience is translated into physicality? The inner experience of our thoughts, attitudes or emotions toward our exterior physical objects and events? Or, if something else, what else is there that is within the control of our conscious mind that could alter the state of our psyche?
Beliefs and Feeling Tones
- Pg11 – Basically you create your experience through your beliefs about yourself and the nature of reality. Another way to understand this is to realize that you create your experiences through your expectations. Your feeling-tones are your emotional attitudes toward yourself and life in general, and these generally govern the large areas of experience.
(Pause.) They give the overall emotional coloration that characterizes what happens to you. Period. You are what happens to you. - They represent the most inner portion of your experience. This does not mean that they are hidden from you, or are meant to be. It simply means that they represent the core from which you form your experience.
- Pg12 – But it [emotions] represents your deepest, most creative impulses; to fight against it is like trying to swim upstream against a strong current.
- These feeling-tones, then, pervade your being. They are the form your spirit takes when combined with flesh. From them, from their core, your flesh arises.
- What are feeling-tones? Can they be manipulated or handled consciously so as to affect a more favorable physical experience?
- Pg13 While your feeling-tone is uniquely yours, still it is expressed in a certain fashion that is shared by all consciousnesses focused in physical reality.
… cells and organs have their own awarenesses, and a gestalt one. So the race of man also has individual consciousness and a gestalt or mass consciousness.
… The mass race consciousness, in its terms, possesses an identity. You are a portion of that identity while still being unique, individual and independent.- How does this help us reconcile: while we individually create our own realities, that creation is a cooperative creation?
- Is this how we can create unique individual personal realities? Are our organs and other body member gestalts the building blocks of our natural environment. Are these cooperative gestalts what produce the initial psychic events required to change the psyche and flow outward from the inner psyche to affect the physical circumstances preceding the feedback we call experience. Are these gestalts what form the psyche expressed in physicality?
If so, how do we influence these inner gestalts to affect the change in our psyche that produces the different physical circumstance and experience? - Can we get any help understanding how we influence our member gestalts by recognizing we too are member gestalts of yet larger individual gestalt consciousnesses that have unique personalities and prefered circumstances desired for experience?
- If we are unique individual members within a mass humanity consciousness gestalt , how does that gestalt consciously direct our cooperation?
Might this question find some clue to the mechanism and power we know of suggestion and hypnotic suggestion? Is suggestion received as a call for cooperation to our personal and inner gestalts? If so, the necessity for suggestion to have the correct feeling tones might explain why simply suggesting words that are not believed are not acted upon by the hypnosis subject. It also explains why the use of affirmations are largely ineffective until believable or a person feels like he believes them.
- You are confined only to the extent that you have chosen physical reality, and so placed yourself within its context of experience. While physical, you follow physical laws, or assumptions. These form the framework for corporeal expression.
- How is this related to the concepts of our being an individual member of a larger mass consciousness gestalt and that our that individual member is itself made up of lessor gestalts?
