{"id":274,"date":"2010-05-09T19:22:25","date_gmt":"2010-05-09T23:22:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/believeit.us\/?p=274"},"modified":"2010-05-10T00:02:45","modified_gmt":"2010-05-10T04:02:45","slug":"courage-and-presence-of-mind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/believeit.us\/?p=274","title":{"rendered":"Courage and Presence of Mind"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>COURAGE AND PRESENCE OF MIND MEAN THE SAME THING.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Presence of mind implies command of mind<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Cowardice and lack of mental control mean about the same\u00a0 thing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cowardice is rooted in hurry<\/strong>, the <strong>habit of hurry or lack\u00a0 of repose.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><em>All degrees of <strong>success <\/strong><\/em>are based on <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">courage-mental or physical<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>All degrees of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>failure are based on timidity<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can cultivate courage and increase it at every minute and\u00a0 hour of the day. You can have the satisfaction of knowing that in\u00a0 everything you do you have accomplished two things-namely, the\u00a0 doing of the thing itself and by the manner of its doing, adding\u00a0 eternally to yourself another atom of the quality of courage. You can\u00a0 do this by the <strong>cultivation of deliberation<\/strong>-deliberation of speech, of\u00a0 walk, of writing, of eating-deliberation in everything.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There is always a bit of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">fear where there is a bit of hurry<\/span>. When you\u00a0 hurry to the train you are in fear that you may be left, and with that\u00a0 comes fear of other possibilities consequent on your being left. When\u00a0 you hurry to the party, to the meeting of a person by appointment, you\u00a0 are in fear of some ill or damage resulting from not being in time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This <strong>habit of thought <\/strong>can, through an unconscious training,\u00a0 <strong>grow to such an extent as to pervade a person&#8217;s mind, at all times\u00a0 and places<\/strong>, and bring on a <strong>fear of loss of some kind<\/strong>, when there is\u00a0 absolutely no loss to be sustained.<\/p>\n<p>For instance a person may hurry to\u00a0 catch a street car and act and feel as if a great loss would occur did\u00a0 he not get on that particular car, when there may be another close\u00a0 behind, or at most two or three minutes&#8217; waiting will bring it. Yet the\u00a0 fear of waiting those three minutes grows to a mountain in size, and is\u00a0 in that person&#8217;s mind a most disagreeable possibility.<\/p>\n<p>Through mere\u00a0 habit a similar condition of hurry may characterize that person&#8217;s\u00a0 walking, eating, writing-in short, everything he does, and will ren-\u00a0 der it more and more difficult for such person to act with coolness\u00a0 and deliberation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The quality of mind or emotion underlying all this hurried mental condition and consequent hurried act, is fear. <strong>Fear is but another\u00a0 name for lack of power to control our minds, or, in other words, to\u00a0 control the kind of thought we think or put out.<\/strong>\u00a0 It is this kind of unconscious mental training (which is very\u00a0 common), that <strong>begets a permanent condition of mind<\/strong> more and\u00a0 more liable to large and small panics at the least interruption or\u00a0 trivial disappointment. It <strong>makes disappointments<\/strong> when none are necessary. It is the ever-opening wedge <strong>letting in more and more the\u00a0 thought current of fear<\/strong>.
